At The Mount students and adults live, learn and work together in a thriving community comprising a long-standing highly respected Specialist Further Education College and an innovative new Cohousing community for adults. The individual's needs, potential and aspirations are recognised, met and developed. Many co-workers live on-site providing all-round care, supervision and support. Local people, day students, work experience, social enterprises and many cultural and leisure activities make a lively mix, with growing outreach and integration in the wider community.

What Makes The Mount Feel Like Home

Our students in the Nature and Crafts Project Group have put together this wonderful video with the help of our young volunteer coworkers to give an insight into what makes The Mount feel like home. Click here to view it on YouTube

Living, learning and working

Education at The Mount Independent Specialist College (founded in 1970) offers a three-year course of further education for students with a range of learning disabilities, followed by an optional progression route of 1 or 2 years of further training. An all-round curriculum provides a balance between cognitive, experiential and practical approaches enriched by artistic, movement and therapeutic activities and grounded in a warm and supportive social and cultural community environment.

College - learning for life and work

Inclusion and Individuality

Students at The Mount describe how they gain greater independence, learn skills and create friendships. They develop academic and pre-vocational skills, find a personal voice and are well-prepared to engage in the community outside college life. Students gain a strong sense of self and the tools for greater independence in their lives. At all times the needs, development and aspirations of the individual are of paramount importance.

A Unique Learning Environment

At The Mount every aspect of education, work and life provides a fertile ground for learning and development, including the arts and crafts, practical and social aspects of home life, work experience, work in the gardens and estate, care for the environment, cultural activities, leisure activities and outward bound pursuits. Every possible opportunity is used to stimulate and support students' progress.

Innovation in housing and community building

Cohousing at The Mount provides a flexible, innovative approach to housing and community building by separating housing from care and support. This empowers individuals to take control of their lives and maximise their independence while enjoying the security of their own private tenancy within a mutually supportive Camphill community household.

Independence, Integration and Opportunity

The Mount has developed a new form of Cohousing in accordance with our core purpose, values, vision and method. We offer a choice of lifestyle which combines personalised support with equality and full participation in shared living, meaningful work and a  flexible and innovative approach to housing and community building.
