Movement Arts and Music
During their time at the Mount, movement, art and music play an important part in the student’s development. They spend a considerable time doing drama, speech formation, music, eurythmy, gymnastics, social games, painting, form drawing and black and white drawing. Within all this artistic endeavour there is a strong social emphasis; exploring and trying to understand social relationships and one’s own path through life

Only in learning to hear can we learn to speak. -Rudolf Steiner
Special attention is paid to the articulation and shaping of language. In recitation of poetry, attention is paid to the inner beauty of poetic language. Students with speech problems are slowly led through speech exercises. They are encouraged to repeat sounds and form words. The verbal expression of the students’ own thoughts is encouraged and developed. Discussion practice is encouraged and developed, practice giving small talks on certain subjects and making speeches. The student is encouraged to express their feelings in speech, reciting poetry in order to enable them to express their feelings artistically

The specialist knowledge of the college’s
doctor informs the prescribing of therapies that will balance and
strengthen specific aspects of each student. The Mount offers Bothmer
Gymnastics, Eurythmy, Hauschka Massage, Painting, Speech Formation
and Music.

During the third year, performing arts plays an important part in the students’ development. In the first 2 terms, the students work towards a eurythmy performance, and in the following 2 terms the students work towards an end of year drama production which will be presented to the community, friends and family, and a chance to perform the play out of the Mount at another venue |

| Bothmer Gymn is practised regularly to support
the central process of integrating the student’s soul-spiritual
being with her/his bodily organisation. Developing the senses
of movement, spatial awareness, balance and inner equilibrium,
Bothmer gym helps students to guide their energies in space
and time, directing them meaningfully while finding a secure
centre from which to reach out into the world. Interactive group
games and exercises help to improve social competence while
bringing mobility to thinking, feeling and willing and enabling
a more complete expression of individual intention. |
| Outward Bound Activities are important for
increasing physical confidence, expanding perceived boundaries
and experiencing social co-operation. Students visit local adventure
centres, participate in climbing, abseiling, swimming, kayaking,
and go on camping and youth hostelling expeditions. |
|
Music-making and singing feature
strongly, aiding students’ own expression and development
and enlivening the rhythm of seasonal festivals through the year.

Drama is a valuable tool for social activity, bringing the class together and developing the awareness of working together as a group. Drama is an artistic activity, calling on the students’ imagination and creativity, emotions and self-control, and social qualities. It nurtures the soul and develops the human being in the process. One can see many young people unexpectedly discovering themselves and displaying remarkable qualities. It is a maturation process at its best – a wonderful social exercise where even the best actor could not survive alone without the support of the whole company.

Eurythmy is a harmonious form of speech- and music-based
movement, a performance art, an educational tool and an effective
therapy.
Applied worldwide in schools, workplaces and clinics, eurythmy group
work enhances spatial, tonal, rhythmic and social awareness, integrating
uprightness, co-ordination and dexterity
